I’m a passionate and enthusiastic A Level and GCSE Business and Accounting teacher (Subject Leader) with over 10 years’ experience teaching in variety of secondary school settings with a variety of student needs. I have a BA in Business Management and a PGCE in business and economics education from the Institute of Education (IOE) I am also a GCSE and A Level business examiner and can provide insights into what examiners (like me!) look for in responses to help each student get the best possible mark they can. I can also provide additional, differentiated materials for each lesson based on each student’s strengths and weaknesses within the subject. My teaching style has two ‘wings’ to it - one that helps to build confidence through knowledge acquisition (the foundation) and the second, exam excellence strategies around assessment objectives. Having the right balance between each of these two ‘wings’ will help the student ‘fly’ and reach their goal!

Hello, my name is Philip. I am 31 years old and I am originally from Belfast, currently living in Reading.
I was lucky enough to know from the age of four that I wanted to be a teacher and have never strayed from that goal since. In 2014 I completed my Teacher training at Stranmillis University College in Belfast, receiving my www.*** (Bachelor of Education) degree in Business and Enterprise and since then I have gone on to be the Head of Department for the Business and Enterprise department at a Berkshire secondary school as well as Head of Year.

In general, I always endeavor to make Business as interesting and as accessible as possible! I try to fight the perception every day that Business is a 'boring subject'. With help from an enthusiastic teacher who is passionate about Business and lots of exam practice, I believe everyone find value in their Business qualification.
What separates myself from other tutors is the emphasis that I place on exam technique in my sessions. In my experience as a teacher I have seen students jump one or two grades ahead purely based on an improved writing style and improvement in their exam technique. With the new increasingly demanding A Level and GCSE qualifications now in place, this skill is now more important than ever. A student can learn their Business textbook inside out, but if they are unable to present their knowledge in the format that the examiner is looking for, they will not achieve their full potential in the qualification.
A Typical lesson of mine would include the following:
Memory Recall starter. Usually 4 minutes given to the student to answer 10 simple recall questions based on previous content. This is an excellent way to help students retain information they may otherwise forget over time.
Delivery of lesson content. A mixture of powerpoint slides, workbooks and other resources will be used here to deliver. I feel it is really important to have an example-heavy approach to delivery, backing up theory with real-life business examples that students can use in their own answers.
Exam Practice. This will typically include some modelling. Usually I will either model an exam answer and ask the student to complete a similar question afterwards, or a half and half approach will be used where I will complete part of the answer and the student will finish it.
Check exam answers. Together we will review the answers and suggest improvements to take forward.
As a Geography and Business tutor, I bring a comprehensive and tailored approach to help students excel in these subjects. In CIE Geography, I offer in-depth explanations of physical and human geography concepts. I use real-world examples and case studies to make the subject relevant and engaging.
In Business, my tutoring covers a wide range of topics associated mainly with the AQA exam board. I provide practical insights into business operations, strategy, and decision-making, drawing from both theoretical frameworks and current industry trends. I emphasize critical thinking and problem-solving skills, encouraging students to apply their knowledge to real business scenarios.
My teaching style involves interactive sessions, where students actively participate in discussions, analyze case studies, and work on practical exercises. I adapt my teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles, ensuring that each student receives personalized attention and support.
Additionally, I aim to instill a passion for the subjects. Whether preparing for exams, working on assignments, or gaining a deeper understanding of the subjects, my goal is to empower students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in their academic endeavors.
I'm excited to offer tutoring and life coaching services that are not just educational but also inspirational and supportive. Having recently completed my exams with an impressive 43/45 in the IB program, my experiences uniquely position me to relate to and advise students on both their studies and the broader aspects of university life. My teaching approach is friendly and helpful, drawing from my personal journey where I overcame numerous obstacles, including having to teach myself.
