With over 30 years of classroom, strategic, managerial, examination and assessment experience, I bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to tutoring your child/you. Tutoring is all about focusing the student on exactly what the question/task demands and demystifying the process, opening up possibilities and developing intellectual curiosity.
In my most recent school, one class had a value added score of +2.07. Across the entire GCSE cohort, 87% G9-G4 achieved, from a predicted 54%.
Before we start the tutoring, I carry out an audit of what knowledge and understanding of content there is, plus learning about the obstacles you face, what perceptions hold you back and finding out what kind of learner you are.
I will listen really carefully to what you need and will offer a plan to help you progress and move forward. Similarly, if I can't help, I will inform you of this too. It's really important that we get on.
Every student/learner is different; every backstory is unique. Many students have barriers; sometimes reassurance and pointing in the right direction will suffice.
Some years ago, I tutored a student on a Saturday morning. He was a bright and a very able science/maths learner (straight As at GCSE) yet could not handle English or Literature and this was clearly holding him back (both his own self-esteem and his grades). It took a few weeks to instill a new way of apporaching the texts/writing, but once we applied a 'scientific approach' to analysis, it completely revolutinised his way of working. (He moved from a D to an A in four months of being with me, by the way!)
That was not a one-off. My recent tutoring has enabled me to accelerate learners way beyond what they thought they were capable of. Tutees are at the centre of the experince and it is all focused on them. I have an excellent interpersonal style, which is firm and fair, with a strong sense of agenda and coverage. We will go over things, revisiting to reinforce previous learning and to create the space where the tutee feels more independent and able to move forward without support. When a tutee says "I think I'm good from here!" I take that as a moment of great success!
Whether it's GCSE, A Level, BTEC or degree level, I will commit to working with you to make great progress.

I trained for 3 years as an actor at Birmingham School of Speech & Drama ( now Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) and have worked in theatre, film and commercials. As an actor I've found out that the learning process that starts at drama school is something that never ends. There is something wonderful about that fact. Each new role opens up another little world of discovery!
Coaching drama school applicants is a particularly appealing thing. Having been one myself I'm so aware of how much there is to learn and how exciting it all is!
My approach is student-centred rather than method centred. There are many approaches to acting and there is definitely not one method that fits every actor.
Another thought is that I believe in teaching with positive reinforcement rather than criticism.
After the first lesson please pay the full amount in advance of any lesson you would like to arrange. If you had to cancel the lesson, if you were to do so four hours or more before the start I would refund the fee, but if were less than four hours beforehand I would not.
At the moment I solely teach online via Skype or Zoom.
If the internet connection prevented us from linking up for a lesson I would schedule another without further charge at a different and mutually agreed time.

Formerly an Advanced Skills Teacher for Drama and Performing Arts, I was appointed as a Senior Lead Practitioner for Creativity in 2019. My first degree was in English Literature at Southampton. This was followed by a PGCE in Drama and English from the Institute of Education, and another PGCE in Directing Text with Young People, before moving on to my Masters in Education (Drama) working with the University of Middlesex and Trestle Theatre.
My teaching, leadership and whole school responsibilities have included: English Language and Literature; Drama and Theatre Studies; Media and Film Studies; Cross-Curricular Literacy; Raising Boys’ Achievement; Creative and Cultural entitlement. I have worked in a variety of contexts throughout London and Hertfordshire. Most recently, I led a 2-year journey of Creative Teaching and Learning across a two-site secondary school, working towards Artsmark accreditation in April 2021.
During lockdown, I embraced the challenges of remote learning and enjoyed the opportunity to experiment with different modes of delivery and interaction. TutorExtra has given me the perfect opportunity to extend the influence of over 30 years of teaching and learning expertise. I look forward to working with another new cohort of students as we all forge ahead into the ‘new normal’ of education. If you are looking for a highly experienced and effective teacher of English Literature, particularly when it comes to Shakespeare, then here I am.

I have just completed an MFA in Professional Acting at LAMDA and am making my entry into the industry as an actor, singer and writer. Alongside this, I have a real passion for teaching and education for young people. I have worked as a teacher in the past, coaching cricket and tennis for young people aged 4-17. I am also passionate about working with SEND children, having run the MENCAP fun-day scheme at my secondary school and would love the opportunity to continue this work now. Having also completed a CPD accredited LAMDA exams training course, I am ready to begin tutoring learners of all ages and abilities in speech and drama, mainly because I believe communication and artistic practice is essential to education, but also so they can take and excel in LAMDA exams if they wish.

I bring a unique blend of passion, creativity, and expertise to my teaching. Currently attending drama school, I am fully immersed in the world of performance, constantly refining my acting skills and deepening my understanding of the craft. This hands-on experience allows me to offer up-to-date, real-world insights into acting techniques and performance practices. My journey in drama school is not just about learning but also about understanding the nuances of storytelling, character development, and emotional expression, all of which I am eager to share with my students.
In addition to my practical training, I have a strong academic background. Having studied music, English, and drama at A level, I possess a well-rounded understanding of the humanities and the arts. This combination of subjects has helped me develop a deep appreciation for language, structure, and character, as well as an understanding of how these elements work together to create compelling, dynamic performances. Whether it's analyzing a Shakespearean play, exploring character arcs, or crafting a compelling monologue, my academic foundation equips me with the tools to guide students through both the technical and interpretive aspects of drama.
One of my key strengths as a tutor is my ability to connect with students on an individual level. I understand that everyone learns differently and has unique strengths and challenges. I am committed to creating a personalized approach that focuses on building confidence, improving technical skills, and nurturing creativity. My aim is not just to teach students how to perform, but to help them find their own voice and passion within the art of drama. I believe in creating a supportive, encouraging environment where students feel safe to explore their ideas, take risks, and learn from their mistakes.
Moreover, I am dedicated to both the technical and emotional aspects of drama, recognizing that a true performer must be grounded in both. Whether it’s vocal technique, physicality, or emotional depth, I guide students to master each aspect with care and precision. I also understand the importance of building a student's emotional intelligence, helping them connect with the characters they portray on a deeper, more authentic level. Through a combination of structured lessons and creative exercises, I encourage students to develop their skills while nurturing their love for the craft.
If you are looking for a tutor who combines practical experience, academic knowledge, and a genuine passion for teaching, I am confident I can help you reach your goals. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced student, my dedication to your growth and success will ensure that our time together is both productive and inspiring. I am committed to helping you refine your skills, discover your potential, and most importantly, enjoy the process of learning and performing.
