I have taught English for fourteen years, spending the last six at my local secondary school in Stroud. Before that I spent the previous six years at a secondary school in Churchdown, where I was an `Outstanding` teacher in a department that was rated `Outstanding` by Ofsted.
I currently teach 11-16 year olds, specialising in students who struggle with literacy and GCSE grade 4/5 borderline students. I have also taught Gifted and Talented and Particularly Able students and have a proven track record across a range of ages.
I am also an experienced examiner who currently marks for a popular GCSE exam board.

I have been a private tutor for nearly six years for multiple companies - both in person and online. I have hosted exchange programmes to help students with English as a foreign language. I have helped to run summer schools. I have been educated at two Russell Group universities: my undergraduate degree in English Literature and History was acquired from the University of Exeter, while my postgraduate degree in English PGCE with QTS was acquired from the University of Oxford. I have been teaching English in a state comprehensive school for nearly four years, in which I have taught/still am teaching KS3 English, GCSE English (both Language and Literature), and A Level English Language and Literature (all with AQA). I specialise in teaching English to any secondary aged students; however, I have experience in teaching the eleven plus and am also able to help KS2 students with preparation for English at secondary school. I have been teaching primary for 4 years now and am greatly enjoying it. I have taught the entirety of KS2 during this time and have experience teaching KS1 also. During my most recent year, I taught year six and supported pupils through their SATs. Pupils achieved a 100% pass mark for the reading paper with 42% achieving the greater depth standard. Pupils also scored highly in grammar and 81% achieved the expected standard in this subject. In maths, 42% of pupils achieved the greater depth standard in 2022-2023.

About Me: Experience & Interests
Having qualified as a teacher in 2004, I have been teaching at Secondary level (including A Level) for 16 years. My first two years in the profession were spent teaching in Bassaleg School in Newport before moving to Oxfordshire 14 years ago, to teach in a comprehensive school in Abingdon. In 2008, I became Head of English, a role I held for 6 years prior to having children. I have been tutoring privately for the past 6 years, with tutees ranging from Year 5 to Year 11. My area of interest and expertise for tutoring has mainly focused on KS4, but I also have experience in tutoring younger students for their Year 6 SATS Exam and for the 13+ Grammar School examination. In my role as Head of English, I oversaw Literacy across the Curriculum Interventions and Developments as well as mentoring trainee interns and delivering professional development sessions to newly qualified teachers. As a mentor for the PGCE teacher-training course at The University of Oxford, I have also regularly assisted the university in interviewing applicants for their course. As an examiner for AQA Literature, I have had training in understanding the requirements of the new 2015 specification, as well as three years’ experience of grading exam scripts. I am also an assessor for the National Foundation for Educational Research, an independent provider of research in education. I have experience in teaching various exam boards including AQA, WJEC, Edexcel and IGCSE. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the violin and piano, going to the gym, swimming and skiing.

Approaches to Tutoring
Different students require different approaches to learning and so I work hard to tailor my sessions according to the needs of the student. In addition to one-to-one online tutoring, I also offer paired tuition (with someone of a similar age and ability) and small group tuition (Maximum of 6 per class). I offer term-time and holiday lessons: one-off sessions, short term or long term according to the needs of the student. Please send me a message if you would like further information and prices. After careful consideration I decided to leave mainstream education and set up my own learning centre using kinaesthetic activities with play therapy.

I have been teaching English one-to-one and small groups for over 11 years. I have taught all ages ranging from 3 years to over 70 years. I teach all levels ranging from Pre-Entry to C1. I teach people including students, to migrants, to different professions ranging from Housekeepers to Business professionals. I am able to teach General English, Academic English, IELTS preparation, TOEFL preparation, Functional Skills English, and Trinity College ESOL Skills for Life exam preparation.
I really enjoy teaching English as a second or foreign language and I believe in making the learning fun.
