A widely-published poet and teacher based in Somerset, Matt runs the annual Somerset Young Poets competition, and is well-known at schools across the county. As a teacher, he has worked with the Poetry Society and the Arvon Foundation, the John Betjeman Prize and the George Orwell Society. His poetry publications include a prize-winning pamphlet, a first collection and a book of translation, while his poetry has appeared in numerous journals. In 2018, he won a Literature Matters award from the Royal Society of Literature. He has an MA (distinction) in Creative and Life Writing. Hello and welcome to my tutoring profile. To give context, I was a Teaching Assistant for 15 years and worked across all areas of primary levels from Nursery up to year 6. I finished my career being the leading Teaching Assistant in neurodiverse children as I have a passion for all children to have the education they deserve. I am an extremely caring, empathetic person with a passion for children’s education.
I planned, delivered and evaluated focus groups on a daily basis, often with the purpose to encourage cooperative engagement with other pupils. In addition, I had key children, who I would track their journey, in order to ensure they were meeting the key markers set out in the curriculum.
I would liaise with parents/carers on a daily basis. I created exciting multi-sensory environments which inspired and aided classroom learning.
I’ve worked alongside a variety of teachers when working in years 4,5 & 6 which allowed me to familiarise myself with the KS2 curriculum. I have 5 years’ experience working in Year 6 giving me a wealth of understanding of preparation for SATS, with children across all abilities.
In addition, I ran the school choir and school eco group. With the choir they would perform in assemblies, nursing homes and the local community. The eco group tended an allotment alongside people in the community as well as projects of planting using recycled materials around the school.

I worked in research and teaching roles within UK universities between 2004 and 2024 and am an Advance HE Fellow. I have over 15 years experience and have worked within many schools, two of which were long-term.

I have been teaching since 2006 as a Primary School Teacher and have been very fortunate and lucky to have worked at a range of schools.
I have taught in outstanding schools, that have been satisfactory or required improvement and faith schools. I have taught as a classroom teacher in KS1 and KS2. I have experience of both phonics assessment and SATS experience. The bulk of my career has been teaching in London schools and more recently I have taught in schools in Leicestershire, Derby and Nottingham.
