I am 45 years old with 21 years experience of Science and Maths teaching aged 8-16 and an experienced tutor of Maths and English am able to offer individual private tuition in Maths, English (including reading), Science and 11+ entrance exams.
I am able tutor Maths and English to KS3 level and Science (combined or separate Sciences) to GCSE.
During the last 15 years, I have provided tuition to many students across a wide range of ages and abilities with excellent results both in terms of increased attainment, enthusiasm and enjoyment of their learning. We have a dedicated covid secure classroom. We have an extremely comprehensive equipment store to cover all the experiments for GCSE and A level Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics). This enables the students to take part in experiments which enhances their learning.
Since the lockdown, our response was to transition, virtually overnight, our teaching online. The tutor’s hands became the student’s hands and the cameras their eyes, the microphone and speakers became their voice and ears. With the power of a broadcast switcher, the student did not have one view but many, depending on what was needed. In addition, we decided to live stream tutorials on YouTube going through GCSE and A level Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology, topic by topic, week by week utilising all our equipment for experiments. This was to develop a resource for all not just our own students.

I apply varieties of aspects in my lessons to develop learners’ skills based on their ability and progress. My teaching method follow review of previous topic and link with the current topic and often with real life examples. I emphasise on the non-linguistic representations such as graphs, models or images as visualisation helps in long-term memory compared to the text-heavy materials. I encourage the learners to use varieties of resources to seek information beyond the textbook. Moreover, I address the subject specific mathematics and English needs of learners. I conduct regular progress test and often with self assessment to motivate the students for self-actualisation. As a science teacher, I emphasise on the ‘Generating and Testing Hypotheses’. A typical session will involve a short review of previous work and a mix of explanation, verbal questions and exam-style questions to check understanding. Students will complete work during the session using Google Jamboard. This approach will be changed where the tutor judges this is necessary for the ideas being covered or to meet the needs of the Student.
Students may need to print questions so they will need access to a printer.
I have taught Chemistry at a large Leicestershire 14-18 School for over 30 years. I have been Head of Chemistry at this school for 20 years. I teach AQA GCSE Chemistry and AQA A-Level Chemistry. I have also taught Nuffield A-Level Chemistry. I have tutored AQA, EDEXCEL, OCR and OCR(Salters) A-Level Chemistry and AQA and OCR GCSE Chemistry. I have tutored students outside of school for 26 years with much success. Many of my A-level students have achieved 100% in A-level Chemistry modules and I have tutored many GCSE students who have achieved 100% in all their GCSE modules for GCSE Chemistry. I am also a Principal Examiner for IGCSE Chemistry. I have marked both Foundation and Higher IGCSE Chemistry papers. I have been an Examiner for Singapore A-level Chemistry. Both these roles have helped me to recognise the difficulties that students have with both GCSE and A-level examination questions and the way to answer them successfully. My approach is variable depending on the ability of the student and what they are struggling on at the time. However I believe that the practicing of past paper questions is vital for examination success. It is the attention to detail which counts in an examination and I make sure all of my students know everything in the syllabus and have practiced lots of different styles of examination question. I tutor online using Skype, Zoom, Teams and FaceTime usually texting, emailing or messaging students examination practice questions which works really well. At the moment all my tutoring is online.
