I have been teaching French and Spanish for over 25 years, in secondary schools, adult education courses and business companies. I have also implemented and developed a Latin GCSE course in my local school, which has been thriving for 25 years. I am experienced in teaching all levels up to advanced for French and A'level for Spanish and Latin.
I welcome learners from all academic and cultural backgrounds, all ages and abilities; I am just keen to share my linguistic skills!

I`m a French bi-lingual (French native) opera singer currently based in Brighton. I teach French and English privately (my youngest students are 3, and the eldest 50+ !) and I`m happy to teach online or in person (max 10 mile radius from Brighton).

Hi there! I'm Emily and I'm really looking forward to being your tutor. I have been a teacher for more than 5 years and have experience in different schools teaching to all ages (from 7-18!). I have also been an Assistant Head of Year 9-10 which has helped me learn about children's needs, emotions and interests more so than you could ever imagine. We will spend time discussing your likes and dislikes and your learning styles so that I can adapt my lesson style around YOU. Everyone can learn a language, they just need to find the right teaching style that suits them. As for me, well, I have first-hand experience of teaching in a classroom to children from aged 7-18. I have taught KS3 and KS4 French and Spanish as well as KS5 (A-Level) French. Therefore I have up-to-date knowledge of the AQA and Edexcel exam boards and have marked and moderated hundreds of exam papers. I am also going to be doing exam marking for Edexcel and AQA this spring / summer which will give even more comparison for exam scenarios. I am a recent graduate from Cambridge University in History and am currently completing a postgraduate degree in Intellectual History.
I am passionate about all forms of historical processes across space and time.
At undergraduate level I focused on eighteenth century British socioeconomics, nineteenth century British parliamentary politics; eleventh and twelfth century European history (including heresy and the Crusades); Enlightenment political thought; the early modern Ottoman and Safavid empires; nineteenth century Islamic political thought; and Tokugawa Japan. This wide-ranging portfolio means that I can provide a breadth of expertise to students at GCSE and A-level, but am also more than open to teaching many other historical contexts.
I have particular specialisms in historiography; intellectual history; and political thought, which I am happy to teach to any students looking for post-A-level tutoring.
As a native French speaker and additionally, having proficient reading ability in Latin, I am pleased to also provide Latin and French language lessons, either in addition to History lessons or independantly of them.
My techniques and teaching methodology:
- My tutoring style is first and foremost tailored to each individual student. I work closely with students to create customized study plans that help them achieve their academic goals. I use engaging and effective teaching methods to help students understand difficult concepts and develop the skills they need to succeed in History, French or Latin exams and beyond. I also use tools to monitor and track student progress, and provide regular feedback to students.
- Interactive teaching that supports independent thinking is a mode of teaching that I find particularly rewarding, as I aim to adapt my tutoring technique to suit the prior knowledge and learning needs of different students. This requires an accomodation of mixed abilities and knowledge levels through inclusive, question-led teaching practices based on the student's contributions.

As a qualified teacher for both MFL and ESOL, I have been teaching Spanish (KS3-KS5) and French (KS3) for a few years in secondary schools. Also I have been tutoring Spanish mainly in the evenings for over ten years. (KS4-KS5/Adults).
More recently, I worked as a Learning Support Practitioner for ESOL in a college. (19+).
I look to enable each student to achieve what they are aiming for - whether it be the top grade at A level, GCSE or entrance to a Private Selective School at 7+, 11+ or 13+ level for the Common Entrance Examinations or else to a Grammar School of their choice or to brush up their level in English or Maths.
I am very positive in my outlook and always look to bring the best out of each student I teach. I have enabled many children to achieve their aims in over 10 years of tutoring experience.
